National Movement Says Saakashvili Survives Assassination Attempt

A group of armed men tried to attack leader of the National Movement opposition election bloc Mikheil Saakashvili in western Georgian town of Zugdidi today.

Footage broadcasted by the Georgian TV stations shows how the supporters of Saakashvili stopped the car, which tried to broke into the crowd surrounding Saakashvili in the center of Zugdidi. Bodyguards of Saakashvili dragged out of the car several armed men. No one injured as a result of the incident.

The police appeared at the scene of the incident later and failed to detain the attackers, who escaped.

“It is evident that the attack was an assassination attempt against Mikheil Saakashvili,” Kote Kemularia told reporters, while commenting the incident in Zugdidi.

Mikheil Saakashvili accused the local authorities of organizing the attack.
