CEC Announced Final Results of Presidential Polls

The Central Election Commission (CEC) announced on January 15 final results of the January 4 snap presidential elections.

Mikheil Saakashvili of the National Movement party received 96,27% of votes. Inauguration of the newly elect president will be held on January 25.

Other five contenders for the presidential post received less than 3% in total. Temur Shashiashvili, who governed the Imereti region during Shevardnadze’s presidency, gained 1,85%; Roin Liparteliani – 0,26%; Zaza Sikharulidze – 0,24%; Kartlos Gharibashvili – 0,21%; Zurab Kelekhsashvili – 0,1%.

Representative of the opposition Labor Party to the CEC Badri Niauri refused to sign the final protocol of tally, claiming that the voter lists were compiled with violations.

According to the CEC more than 1,9 million voters cast their ballots on January 4 elections, out of 2,2 million registered voters.
