Georgia to Soften Position over Russia’s WTO Accession
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 17 Feb.'04 / 11:23

The Parliamentary factions supporting the current authorities raised the issue of softening Georgia’s position over Russia’s accession into the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Georgian Parliament passed a resolution in 2002 recommending the government not to support Russia’s WTO accession.

Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze proposed to suspend the resolution “at least for two months.” “The fate of this document absolutely depends on Russia’s policy towards Georgia,” Nino Burjanadze added.

The proposal follows Georgian President’s visit to Moscow, where he received a warm welcome from the Russian officials.

However, the opposition protests against the proposal saying that the suspension of the resolution would be an early decision as President Saakashvili’s visit to Moscow was “unsuccessful.”
