A new opposition public movement - Go Forward Georgia (Tsin Sakartvelo) - was set up on December 24.

The new movement unites several political figures who were allies of ex-President Eduard Shevardnadze, including Irakli Batiashvili and Temur Shashiashvili. The latter was the Governor of Imereti during Shevardnadze’s presidency.

“We will oppose attempts to establish authoritarian rule in the country,” one of the leaders of the movement, former MP Irakli Batiashvili said at the presentation.

The supreme goal of the new public movement, according to its founders, is “to protect national values and struggle against infringements of democratic principles.”
