Parliament Approves Measures to Recheck Voter Lists
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 30 Jun.'06 / 13:14

The Parliament approved with its first hearing amendments to the election code on June 30, envisaging the creation of new tools for rechecking voter lists on the eve of the local self-governance elections scheduled in the country for this autumn. GEL 3, 5 million Lari will be allocated for this purpose.

The proposal was initiated by the opposition Republican Party.

“Although, the Central Election Commission has already prepared voter lists by districts, they include a great deal of inaccuracies; so it becomes necessary to recheck them. We should do it until the election procedures are officially launched,” Chairman of the Committee for Regional Policy and Self-Governance Issues, MP Pavle Kublashvili said at a Parliament’s session on June 30.

According to the draft amendments, special groups will be set up in July for a term of two weeks, which will check the voter lists by visiting each family, door-by-door and then deliver the obtained information to the district commissions for making further corrections in the lists. These special groups will include the representatives from both the ruling party and the opposition. Three such groups will work at each precinct.

“It is our common interest to recheck the lists, so I call on the opposition and the non-governmental organizations to participate in this process,” Georgian Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze said at the session.
