UN Observers’ Vehicles Attacked in Gali
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 17 Aug.'06 / 18:48

Unknown armed men opened fire on two UN observer vehicles in the Gali district of breakaway Abkhazia on August 17, Georgian and Abkhaz sources reported.

The administration of the Georgian State Minister for Conflict Resolution Issues has confirmed the incident, but did not specify any details of the incident.

A Georgian official who preferred to remain anonymous told Civil Georgia that no one was injured in the attack, which occurred near the village of Nabakevi.

Ruslan Kishmaria, the Abkhaz leader’s envoy in the Gali district, told RIA Novosti news agency via phone that Abkhaz law enforcers suspect that a “squad of saboteurs sent to the Gali district from Georgia” were behind the attack.

Kishmaria told Abkhaz news agency Apsnipress that the vehicles were attacked while on a routine patrol of the area.

Sergey Chaban, commander of the Russian peacekeeping forces in the conflict zone, told Apsnipress that the two UN observer vehicles were escorted to the Gali office by a peacekeepers’ convoy following the incident.

No immediate comment was available from the UN Observer Mission in Georgia.
