Minister: Georgia is Preparing Deportees’ Case for ECHR
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 31 Oct.'06 / 15:17

Justice Minister Gia Kavtaradze said on October 31 that the Georgian authorities are preparing a lawsuit to file with the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) regarding the abuse of the rights of Georgians deported from Russia.

On October 31 Gia Kavtaradze briefed a special parliamentary commission that was set up to look into cases of human rights abuses against Georgians in Russia.

While speaking with reporters the Justice Minister refrained from specifying the details of this lawsuit; it is also unclear when the case will be ready.

Chairman of the commission, MP Nika Gvaramia, said that the Parliament and the Government will coordinate their efforts while dealing with the issues of deportees.

According to official reports, about 1 000 Georgians were deported from Russia or forced to return to Georgia in October.
