Russia Violates Airspace over Kodori – Tbilisi Claims
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 22 Aug.'07 / 18:44

The Georgian air defense system tracked two violations of Georgian airspace in Upper Kodori gorge, the Georgian Foreign Ministry said on August 22.

It said the violations occurred north of Omarishara village on August 21 at 6:46 pm local time.

It's unclear whether one or two aircraft were involved in the incident. The aircraft, according to the ministry, came from the Russian Federation.

The Foreign Ministry has not specified whether it was a helicopter or a plane. It, however, provided flight parameters: flight height – 4,000 meters and speed - 470-490 km/h. It, according to the Foreign Ministry, flew five kilometers into Georgian airspace.

Russia has strongly denied the allegation.

“No Russian aircraft conducted any flight even near the Georgian border, including in the vicinity of the Kodori Gorge on August 21,” Alexander Drobishevsky, an aide to the Russian air force commander, told Interfax news agency.
