Republican Party Leader Warns Authorities
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 29 Oct.'07 / 13:24

One of the leaders of the Republican Party Levan Berdzenishvili warned the authorities of grave consequences should they try to use force against the planned demonstration on November 2.

He also said, the opposition expected international mediation following the crisis that would ensue after this demonstration.

Speaking to the popular Kviris Palitra weekly, Berdzenishvili alluded to the statement by Tbilisi Mayor Gigi Ugulava, who said the freedom of expression would be guaranteed, but the police will prevent any disorders.

"We are expecting a lot of people on November 2, after which we will start a negotiating process with the government and reach specific results - a working group will be created or, for instance [former US Secretary of State James] Baker or Colin Powell will arrive [to mediate]. I do not know who that will be exactly, but I can feel it that someone would arrive [to mediate]... I think the processess will start on November 2, but I don't know what the solution will be. We are reviewing various options and preparing for this day. We would attempt to ensure a normal dialogue between the people and the authorities. If the authorities will want to start a war with people we are not responsible for the consequences," Berdzenishvili said. "If  he would act very smartly, Saakashvili may still make it to the next [presidential] elections," Berdzenishvili added.

As Civil.Ge reported earlier the Republican Party leader David Usupashvili was visiting Brussels together with two other opposition leaders, in an attempt to stress their moderate credentials.
