New Rights Party Calls for Referendum on Elections Date
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 5 Nov.'07 / 12:20

New Rights opposition party called on November 5 a referendum to decide when to hold parliamentary elections.

“Unfortunately, confrontation grows,” Davit Gamkrelidze, the New Right leader, said at a news conference. “As far as I know the authorities are ready for certain compromise on elections code, but the major issue – date of elections – still remains unresolved.”

He said the referendum would be the best way out of “the current deadlock.” “Let the people decide when to hold elections – in April or late next year,” MP Gamkrelidze added.

He also said that the New Rights Party shared the ten-party opposition coalition’s demand to hold elections in April as it was originally scheduled before the controversial constitutional amendments last December. The New Rights party is not part of this coalition.

Meanwhile the ten-party coalition plans to enter the fourth day of protesters on November 5. Disappointed with the President Saakashvili’s late-night statement opposition leaders have warned of more protest rallies.
