Saakashvili Meets Public Defender
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 15 Jan.'08 / 17:20

President-elect Mikheil Saakashvili met with Public Defender Sozar Subari on January 15.

The meeting comes after the public defender addressed the president-elect in an open letter and warned him that unless human rights were taken seriously in his second presidential term, another crisis, like the one in November, was inevitable.

“We are going to cooperate intensively with everyone dealing with human rights, with the rule of law and with everyone who is concerned with Georgia’s future. So we are starting dialogue in this regard with all public representatives; not only are we starting this dialogue, but we will continue it,” Saakashvili told journalists after the meeting. “So we will continue working in this regard not only with Sozar Subari, but also with everyone who wants to cooperate with us.”

Sozar Subari told journalists after the meeting that among other things, issues related with creation “public control” on Interior Ministry and creation of additional mechanisms for free and fair parliamentary elections was discussed. Subari said the meeting was “very positive.”
