Russian President Medvedev told his Georgian counterpart, Mikheil Saakashvili, that fomenting tension in the breakaway regions was unacceptable, the Kremlin press office said.

The two presidents met briefly in Astana on July 5 on the sidelines of the ceremonies marking the Kazakh capital’s 10th anniversary.

“During the conversation with Mikheil Saakashvili, the Russian president turned attention to the unacceptability of inflaming conditions in the region, and underlined the need for continuing negotiatings with all the parties involved,” the Kremlin said.

The Kremlin has described the meeting between the two presidents in its press release as “a working contact.”

Georgian officials have yet to comment on the meeting.

Before traveling to Astana, President Saakashvili was in Turin, where he addressed the world congress of architecture.
