The South Ossetian side has said at least fifteen civilians had been killed as a result of shelling of Tskhinvali, the news agency Interfax reported.
Earlier the Georgian side said about ten people, both servicemen and civilians, had been killed on its side.
“We expect to have exact figures on casualties in the morning,” Shota Utiashvili, a Georgian Interior Ministry spokesman, told Civil.Ge at about 4:30am local time on August 8.
“Shooting is ongoing at the moment outside Tskhinvali,” he said.
The South Ossetian side also reported on the ongoing fighting. It said several buildings in Tskhinvali, including the one housing the breakaway region’s parliament, were on fire.
