Parliament Condemns Medvedev’s S.Ossetia Visit
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 16 Jul.'09 / 11:53

Parliament of Georgia passed a statement on July 16 condemning Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s “illegal entry” into breakaway South Ossetia, which, it said, amounted to “illegal crossing of the Georgian state border.”

Medvedev made a previously unannounced visit to the breakaway region and met with South Ossetian leader, Eduard Kokoity, on July 13.

The Parliament said in the statement that the visit was "a step towards final annexation of the occupied Georgian territories and an attempt of legitimisation of ethnic cleansing carried out by the Russian Federation."

In the statement the Georgian lawmakers called on international community to give a proper assessment to Medvedev’s visit and to demand from Russia to de-occupy the Georgian territories and fulfill the EU-brokered ceasefire agreements; to eradicate the results of ethnic cleansing carried out by Russia; to allow the EU Monitoring Mission into the occupied territories; to reverse the decision on recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia and to refrain from such actions, which endanger the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia and other neighbors of Russia.
