EUMM to Monitor Movement of Georgian Armed Forces
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 19 Nov.'09 / 21:39

EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM) said on Thursday it had been informed by the Georgian authorities that there would be “significant movement of the Georgian armed forces due to a restructuring programme.”

According to a memorandum signed between EUMM and the Georgian Ministry of Defense in January, the latter has to inform European monitors in advance about all the planned movement of the troops and military exercises, involving troops greater than the battalion size.

EUMM said that the planned movements, which will take place in a period between November 19 and November 25 and will occur throughout Georgia, but will be mainly focused around Tbilisi, Gori and Bazaleti.

“EUMM will monitor these movements in accordance with its usual procedures,” the mission said in a statement. “This information has been circulated through the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism hotline. EUMM is satisfied that the Georgian authorities are in compliance with their commitments under the Memorandum of Understanding.”
