Gachechiladze Says will not Run for Mayor
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 16 Apr.'10 / 23:14

Levan Gachechiladze, founder of public movement Defend Georgia, put an end to months of speculation about his plans for the May 30 local elections and said he would not run for the Tbilisi mayoral office.

Speaking at a news conference late on Friday evening, Gachechiladze also said that he would not either support any of the opposition mayoral candidates.

"I have invested all of my energy and efforts in achieving a single opposition mayoral candidate; but it did not work," he said.

Gachechiladze said that the only scenario in which he would support any of the candidate would be if Irakli Alasania, leader of Alliance for Georgia; Zviad Dzidziguri, leader of Conservative Party, part of National Council and Gogi Topadze, leader of Industrialist Party - all mayoral candidates, agree on a single candidate; the option is less likely.
