Borjomi Forest Fire 'Mainly Contained'
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 2 Aug.'10 / 12:54

Forest fire in the Borjomi gorge, which erupted on July 31, has been mainly contained as of Monday morning and efforts are underway to fight isolated hot spots of fire, according to the Georgian Ministry for Environment Protection.

“No threat of fire growing into a larger scale exists at this point,” the ministry said.

Three helicopters have been dumping water and fire-fighters and volunteers have been working on the ground to fight the fire, which reportedly destroyed at least 10 hectare of the forest.

Nearby villages in the Borjomi gorge, about 150 kilometers west from Tbilisi, were not under danger and there was no need of evacuation, officials said.

Fire destroyed at least 200 hectare forest in and around Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park, one of Europe’s largest national parks, in August, 2008, which broke out after active phase of hostilities between Russia and Georgia were already over. Georgia blamed Russia of deliberately starting extensive fires in the Borjomi forest by dropping incendiary devices from helicopters on August 15, 2008.
