Although Russia is “interested” in recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia by other states, “it is not a goal in itself,” Russian President, Dmitry Medvedev, was quoted by Russian news agencies as saying on August 3.
He also said that Belarus President, Alexander Lukashenko, had promised in presence of CIS leaders couple of years ago to recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
“He said: ‘I solemnly pledge that I will do everything in the shortest period of time’,” Medvedev said.
President Saakashvili said in an interview with the Belarus state television in mid-July that Russia was “pressing Belarus” to recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
“I think the Belarus will act wisely,” Saakashvili added.
