One Dies in Abkhaz Mosque Attack
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 8 Oct.'10 / 18:46

One man was killed and two others wounded on October 8 after gunmen opened fire to a group of prayers standing outside of a building used by local Muslim community as a mosque in breakaway Abkhazia’s town of Gudauta, the local news agency, Apsnipress, reported.

The attackers, according to this report, opened fire at the group of eight men after approaching the mosque with Volkswagen Touareg SUV at about 3pm local time in the center of the town.

The attackers left the scene after a response fire was opened, Apsnipress news agency reported quoting an official from the prosecutor’s office. According to the report, the vehicle was found later outside Gudauta, which was burnt down, apparently by attackers themselves.

A member of the Spiritual Board of Muslims of Abkhazia, Emik Chakmach-Ogly, was killed in his house in the town of Gagra on July 17, 2010.

Also in July imam at the mosque in Sokhumi claimed that he survived an assassination attempt after he had found an explosive device placed in his vehicle.

Khamzat Gitsba, an imam at the mosque in Gudauta, was shot dead in Gudauta in August, 2007.
