Opposition in Tskhinvali Accuses Authorities of 'Repressions'
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 6 Dec.'11 / 22:16

Opposition in breakaway South Ossetia accused the authorities of launching “repressions” against supporters of Alla Jioyeva, whose victory in the November 27 presidential runoff has been annulled by the court.

Two supporters of Jioyeva were arrested in Tskhinvali on December 6 for, as the local law enforcement agencies said, illegal possession of arms.

Jioyeva told supporters, who are rallying in Tskhinvali center since November 30, that charges were fabricated. “There is no guarantee that the authorities will stop repressions,” she said.

It also emerged on Tuesday that three supporters of Jioyeva were arrested in Vladikavkaz, capital of Russia’s North Ossetian Republic. One of them, Soslan Kokoev, who was in charge of Vladikavkaz-based team of activists supporting Jioyeva, was arrested few days ago on drug-related charges.

Meanwhile, incumbent South Ossetian leader, Eduard Kokoity, whose resignation opposition is demanding, warned on December 6, that risk of further destabilization and civil confrontation was “high.” He called for respecting the Supreme Court’s decision, which on December 6, upheld its earlier decision annulling the November 27 runoff results.
