UNM Holds Series of Day-Long Campaign Rallies
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 8 Sep.'12 / 14:20

Ruling party, United National Movement (UNM), is holding a day-long campaign event involving rallies in eleven towns across the country on Saturday.

The large-scale campaign event was launched with a rally in the town of Zugdidi in western region of Samegrelo, close to the breakaway Abkhazia’s administrative border and will continue with similar outdoor rallies in Ozurgeti, Batumi, Ambrolauri, Akhaltsikhe, Kutaisi, Gori, Telavi, Rustavi and Mtskheta.

The event will be culminated with an indoor rally in Tbilisi’s Sports Palace on Saturday evening.

Before President Saakashvili, who is the chairman of UNM, took the floor at the rally in Zugdidi shortly after noon, his wife Sandra Elisabeth Roelofs addressed ruling party supporters on the town’s central square and said that “Misha’s team” was working “day and night” to further deepen a huge progress achieved in recent years and to resolve all the remaining problems; she also added that the ruling party had the vision for “the future not for the past.”

One of the main lines of attack by the authorities against their major rival in upcoming parliamentary elections, Bidzina Ivanishvili-led Georgian Dream coalition is to claim that if this coalition comes into power it will result into derailing Georgia from its reform path and “throw the country back into the past.”

In his address to thousands in Zugdidi, President Saakashvili said those people, who were against the Rose Revolution almost nine years ago, “are now confronting us”.

“We will not give the future of our children to… various kinds of thieves, bandits, traitors of the homeland – that’s what they are and now it’s time to say this truth,” Saakashvili said.

He said that the October 1 parliamentary election “is our enemy’s final flounder, final struggle, last hope, last Rubicon.”

“Georgia… will cross this Rubicon successfully,” he said.

“Our enemy thought that now is the right time to use different approach with Georgians; they thought: ‘We’ve failed through economic embargos, provocations, explosions and invasion… maybe the Georgian people are now tired and as a result of these elections maybe they will serve us themselves on plate and let’s seize this beautiful country with kind words and bribes’. No. We will have freedom, we want Europe, we want NATO, we want development and better life,” Saakashvili said.

He also said “we will definitely build the most important and main port of Georgia, Caucasus, Eastern Europe and the Black Sea – Lazika”, close to Zugdidi.

“We are building Lazika [close to breakaway Abkhazia] on the line of occupation and instead of us going to Abkhazians – we won’t be able to jump over Russians – Abkhazians themselves will come to us into our developed and successful country,” Saakashvili said. “Rebuilding process that we have started in Batumi, Kutaisi, Tbilisi and now in Lazika will definitely be culminated in Sokhumi.”

“No one will be able to derail us, we will move forwards to our destination… We are not afraid of the enemy and its tricks,” he said.

After Zugdidi, Saakashvili addressed supporters in Ozurgeti and then in Batumi’s main square, where he said: “We should win by a large margin.”

Meanwhile at a simultaneous rally in Akhaltsikhe PM Vano Merabishvili was speaking about the government’s four-year program and Parliamentary Chairman Davit Bakradze was addressing supporters in Ambrolauri.
