Prosecutors Add Charges Against Ex-Army Chief
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 20 Nov.'12 / 15:48

Prosecutor’s office said on Monday it added illegal confinement charges against Brig. Gen. Giorgi Kalandadze, whom the court suspended from office of army chief of staff in connection to separate criminal charges filed against him by prosecutors earlier this month.

The new charges against Kalandadze are related to alleged beating and holding in detention for several hours of a man in September, 2011. Former defense and interior minister, Bacho Akhalaia, has also been charged in connection to the same case earlier this month.

Kalandadze also faces charges of exceeding official authority in connection to two separate cases – both are about alleged abuse of soldiers in February, 2010 and in October, 2011. Akhalaia also faces criminal charges in connection to these two cases. While Akhalaia is in pretrial detention, court released Kalandadze on bail.
