PM Sees 'Positive Dynamic' in Ties with Russia
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 23 May.'14 / 23:41

“Everything will be alright,” PM Irakli Garibashvili said when asked to comment on Russian Foreign Ministry’s statement regarding upcoming signature of the EU-Georgia Association Agreement, which also includes deep and comprehensive free trade treaty.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Alexander Lukashevich, said on May 22 that signing of the Association Agreement with the EU is Georgia’s sovereign right, but Tbilisi should also understand possible consequences, and pointed to the fact that Russia has already become Georgia’s third largest trading partner since Moscow lifted ban on import of Georgian products last year. He also said that country’s sovereign rights should be exercised without damaging the rights of others and mentioned Georgia’s NATO aspirations in this context, adding that Moscow was “alarmed” by Georgian Defense Minister’s remarks made in Washington, when he called on the Western partners to deploy “defensive assets” in Georgia.

“What we have managed in this short period of time is normalization of relations with Russia and de-escalation of relations,” PM Garibashvili told journalists on May 23 after meeting a group of businessmen.

“As you know Russia is assessing very adequately our constructive policy. We have matching steps and I always welcome their positive and constructive policy. We’ve heard Russian officials’ statements that they will not interfere in the process of the Association Agreement, so it should only be welcomed.”

He welcomed Russia’s decision to further expand list of the Georgian agriculture products allowed into the Russian market.

Starting from May 26 Georgia will be able to export tomatoes, packed new potatoes, cucumber, cabbage, eggplant, cherry, apricot, peach, plum, persimmon, kiwi, berries.

“We only have improvements and positive dynamic in relations,” PM Garibashvili said.
