Georgian, Latvian Presidents Discuss NATO Summit
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 19 Aug.'14 / 14:28

Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili spoke by phone on August 18 with his Latvian counterpart Andris Bērziņš to discuss upcoming NATO summit in Wales in September.

Georgian president’s office said that during the phone conversation Margvelashvili stressed that text of NATO summit’s final declaration “should strengthen Georgia’s NATO membership perspective.”

Latvian president’s office said that President Margvelashvili “expressed his gratitude for the tireless support of Latvia to Georgian Euro-Atlantic aspirations.”

“In his turn, President of Latvia Andris Bērziņš assured that Latvia would provide that support in the future as well,” the Latvian president’s office said and added that security situation in the region was also discussed.

The Latvian President plans to visit Georgia in November.

President Margvelashvili held phone conversation with his Polish and Estonian counterparts on August 14 to discuss upcoming NATO summit.

At a meeting in June NATO foreign ministers decided that there will be no membership action plan (MAP) for Georgia on the agenda of the NATO summit in Wales; instead, NATO foreign ministers agreed to develop a “substantive" package to help the country move further closer to the Alliance.
