President Re-Nominates Supreme Court Judge Candidates
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 29 Sep.'14 / 21:11

President Giorgi Margvelashvili has re-nominated two candidates for Supreme Court, once rejected by the Parliament.

Nino Bakakuri and Zurab Dzlierishvili, nominees for the two vacant seats in the Supreme Court, were voted down by the Georgian Dream parliamentary majority on August 1 and if they fail to be confirmed again the President will no longer have the right to re-nominate the same candidates.

MPs from the GD parliamentary majority group said on September 29, that they will now hold consultations to decide whether to support the nominations or not.

At least 76 votes of the 150-member Parliament are required for a candidate to be confirmed as Supreme Court judge for a ten-year term.

When they were first nominated two month ago, Bakakuri and Dzlierishvili received 29 and 27 votes, respectively.

At the time Margvelashvili criticized Parliament’s decision as “absolutely incomprehensible.”

“I will definitely re-nominate the same candidates at the autumn session [of the Parliament] and I hope that that confidence towards the Georgian judiciary will strengthen including through confirmation of such candidates,” Margvelashvili told the Georgian Public Broadcaster on August 1.
