Georgian leadership is gathering at a presidential palace for an emergency session of the National Security Council to discuss developments in neighboring Turkey, where coup attempt is underway.
President Giorgi Margvelashvili; PM Giorgi Kvirikashvili; Parliament Speaker Davit Usupashvili; Interior Minister Giorgi Mgebrishvili; head of the State Security Service Vakhtang Gomelauri; Chief of the General Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces, Maj. Gen. Vakhtang Kapanadze, and secretary of NSC Irina Imerlishvili are attending the meeting, which started shortly after 3am local time.
Georgian Foreign Ministry said it is closely following developments in Georgia’s “neighbor and strategic partner” Turkey, where military said it had seized power but President Tayyip Erdogan vowed that the coup attempt would fail.
“We hope that the situation will be normalized peacefully,” the Georgian MFA said in a statement.
