Germany Grateful to Georgian Troops for ’Courage’ in Repelling Attack in Mazar-i-Sharif
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 11 Nov.'16 / 16:33

The German Foreign Ministry expressed gratitude to Georgian forces from NATO’s Resolute Support Mission, who “courageously, professionally and immediately rushed to help and thwarted the attack” on the German Consulate-General in Mazar‑i‑Sharif.

The attack, which was carried out by the Taliban, was launched after a suicide bomber rammed a truck into a German consulate in Afghanistan, killing at least six civilians and wounding 120, according to foreign media reports.

In a statement released on November 11, the German Foreign Ministry noted that “the heavily armed assailants have been pushed back by Consulate-General security staff, Afghan security forces and special forces from the Resolute Support mission from Camp Marmal.”

“We are particularly grateful to the Afghan security forces and the Georgian forces from Resolute Support who courageously, professionally and immediately rushed to help and thwarted the attack,” the statement reads.

The Georgian troops serving in the NATO-led mission in Afghanistan, whose duties focus on security and rapid reaction force, are deployed in Kabul; at the Bagram Air Field, and Camp Marmal in Mazar-i-Sharif.
