Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 10 Mar.'17 / 15:58

OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media will assist the Government of Georgia in establishing the Media Ombudsman’s Office.

Speaking at the OSCE Permanent Council on March 9, Dunja Mijatović, OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, stated that her office, following the request from the Georgian authorities, will engage a renowned international expert to provide an analysis on the Media Ombudsman’s Office and will present it to the Government of Georgia.

Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili proposed establishment of the Media Ombudsman’s Office on March 6, following the controversial Supreme Court ruling over Rustavi 2 ownership dispute, and invited European media experts for cooperation.

The OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media observes media developments in 57 OSCE participating States, provides early warning on violations of freedom of expression and media freedom and promotes full compliance with OSCE media freedom commitments.
