Belarus Hails Russia’s Recognition of S.Ossetia, Abkhazia
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 28 Aug.'08 / 17:47

Alexander Lukashenko, the president of Belarus, has said that “in the existing situation, Russia had no other moral option, other than to support the appeals by the peoples of South Ossetia and Abkhazia requesting recognition of their right to self-determination in accordance with international documents.”

In a statement posted on the Belarusian president’s website, Lukashenko proposed raising the issue at a session of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) – uniting Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan – which is scheduled for September 5.

He also called for “a unified [CSTO] position” on the issue.

“President [Lukashenko] has assured [his Russian counterpart in a letter sent earlier] that Belarus will remain a reliable ally of Russia's,” the statement reads.
