Saakashvili Thanks China
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 30 Aug.'08 / 11:55

President Saakashvili said he was grateful for China’s position, which showed a reluctance to endorse Russia's recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

“I am grateful to the People’s Republic of China, which took a very strict position, as well as the Central Asian states,” Saakashvili said while speaking with local authorities in the port town of Poti late on August 29. The Russian military still maintain two outposts at the entrance to the town.

On August 29 leaders from the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), which along with Russia, includes China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, issued a declaration after a meeting in the Tajik capital, Dushanbe.

“The SCO states express grave concern in connection with the recent tensions around the South Ossetia issue and urge the sides to solve existing problems peacefully, through dialogue, and to make efforts facilitating reconciliation and talks,” the declaration reads.

It, however, also welcomed Russia’s “positive role” in promoting peace in the region.

“The SCO leaders welcomed the six-point proposal on solving the conflict which was reached in Moscow on August 12, expressing their support for Russia's positive role in promoting peace and cooperation in the region,” the declaration reads.

President Saakashvili also said that the entire “civilized world” is united in contamination of Russia’s move.

“Only one or two failed states may recognize [the two breakaway regions] – mainly those that are Russia’s tails,” Saakashvili said on August 29. “Russia is today isolated as never before.”
