Georgian FM, Opposition Leader at Munich Conference

On a sideline of a high-profile Munich Security Conference on February 5-7, Georgian Foreign Minister, Grigol Vashadze, held bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Germany, Latvia and Estonia, the Georgian Foreign Ministry said.

Vashadze also met with U.S. special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke and Senator John Kerry, chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, the Foreign Ministry said.

“Discussions at these meetings focused on Georgia's relations with respective countries and a broad spectrum of de-occupation-related issues,” the Georgian Foreign Ministry said.

From Georgia the conference was also attended by Irakli Alasania, leader of opposition Alliance for Georgia.

His press office said that on the sideline of the conference, Alasania had an opportunity to talk with German Defense Minister; Foreign Ministers of Sweden, Estonia and Azerbaijan, as well as with Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov.

Alasania also talked with Philip Gordon, the U.S. assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs; James Jones, the U.S. national security advisor, as well as Senators Joseph Lieberman and John McCain.

“Georgia’s security issues and democratic processes in Georgia were discussed during these meetings,” according to Alasania’s press office.
