Authorities Resume IDPs Eviction
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 18 Jul.'11 / 15:33

In the new round of eviction of internally displaced persons from temporary shelters in Tbilisi, four buildings were emptied by the authorities on July 18, according to the ministry in charge of the internally displaced persons.

About fifty displaced families were evicted as part of, what the authorities call, resettlement process in which evicted families are offered housing options in the provinces. But in majority of cases alternative houses in the provinces are rejected by the IDP families, because of absence of proper livelihood conditions there. The same was in case of previous two rounds of evictions in summer, 2010 and January, 2011 when hundreds of IDP families were evicted from their temporary shelters in Tbilisi, which they occupied in 2008.

While the eviction process went calmly in three locations on July 18, there has been a confrontation during the eviction of IDP families from a building which once was a kindergarten in Tbilisi suburb. A group of women with children barricaded themselves inside the building, trying to prevent the police to enter; but the police made their way inside and the building was emptied.
