Azerbaijani MFA: No Disputed Issues in Ties with Georgia
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 19 May.'12 / 17:23

There are “no disputed issues” in relationship between Baku and Tbilisi, Azerbaijani news agency, Trend, reported quoting spokesman of the Foreign Ministry of Azerbaijan, Elman Abdullayev, on May 19.

He said that border area in the David Gareji monastery complex was “purely a legal issue”, which was discussed in frames of bilateral commission working on border delimitation and demarcation.

Abdullayev also said that this issue was expected to be discussed by the ministers of foreign affairs of Georgia and Azerbaijan during their planned meeting in Chicago on the sideline of NATO summit.

Portion of Davit Gareji complex with its cave monasteries is one of the major stumbling blocks in border demarcation talks ongoing for many years already between Georgia and Azerbaijan.

Georgian and Azerbaijani foreign ministers held a phone conversation on May 17 to discuss a recent controversy, caused after repositioning of Azerbaijani border guards on May 6 in a disputed border section running through the monastery complex, no longer allowing visitors from Georgia to access some of the sites of the complex.
