U.S. Officials to Assess Pre-Election Situation in Georgia
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 7 Sep.'12 / 11:31

The U.S. interagency delegation will visit Georgia on September 10-12 to assess the pre-election environment ahead of the October 1 parliamentary polls, the State Department said on Thursday.

The delegation will be led by U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Thomas O. Melia and will also include officials from USAID and the Departments of Defense and Justice.

“The delegation is visiting Georgia to highlight the importance of a democratic electoral process that results in a Parliament which reflects the will of the Georgian people,” the U.S. Department of State said on September 6.

“Deputy Assistant Secretary Melia and the delegation will hold a number of meetings to urge the Georgian Government to implement Georgia’s electoral laws in a fair, impartial, and transparent manner, and to urge all political parties to fully participate in the process while abiding by the law,” it said.
