Interior Ministry: One Lopota Gorge Gunman Detained
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 8 Sep.'12 / 17:42

The Georgian Interior Ministry said on Saturday it had captured one of the members of an armed group, which clashed with the Georgian troops in Lopota gorge close to the Russian border on August 29 in which three Georgian special service personnel and eleven suspected militants died.

The Interior Ministry identified detained suspected militant as “citizen of the Russia Federation from North Caucasus”, Akhmet Chataev.

“The detained person was wounded and he was rendered the relevant medical assistance. At present his life is not in a danger,” the ministry said in a brief statement, which does not specify when Chataev was detained.

The statement also says that the Interior Ministry “continues the special operation” in the Lopota gorge.

When the Interior Ministry announced on August 30 about the end of “main phase” of the operation against suspected militants in the Lopota gorge, close to the Dagestan section of the Georgian-Russian border, it said that “several wounded members of the armed group might be hiding in the gorge.”
