Nominee for Culture Minister Named
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 23 Jul.'14 / 14:00

PM Irakli Garibashvili has named for the post of the culture minister Mikheil Giorgadze, co-founder and chief executive of Eastern Promotion, a company best known for organizing a long-running annual Tbilisi Jazz Festival.

PM Garibashvili announced about cabinet reshuffle on July 21, affecting seven government members with two of them switching to other cabinet posts and other five, including minister of culture Guram Odisharia, losing seats in the cabinet.

While the PM named nominees for six vacant ministerial seats on July 21 and on July 22, announcement of a nominee for the Minister of Culture and Monuments Protection was delayed. Reports emerged that some of the potential nominees declined offer to take the culture minister’s portfolio, which also includes preservation of monuments of historic and cultural heritage.

PM’s office said in a statement that Giorgadze was picked after a lengthy and thorough deliberation; it also said that the PM believes Giorgadze is a right candidate who will take “modern approach” required for the culture ministry.

Mikheil Giorgadze, whose company also manages Tbilisi Concert Hall, also known as Philharmonic Hall, told Imedi TV that he will try to make the ministry more pro-active, which will be able to take initiative.

With all the ministerial nominations already announced, the list will be sent to president’s administration and then the President should submit the reshuffled cabinet for confirmation to the Parliament.

Confirmation of the reshuffled cabinet, which requires more than half of the parliament members votes, is not likely to face any hurdles in the 150-seat legislative body, where ruling GD coalition holds 84 seats.
