Lithuanian Diplomat Becomes New Head of EUMM
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 19 Dec.'14 / 18:42

Lithuanian diplomat, Kęstutis Jankauskas, has been appointed as new head of the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM).

Kęstutis Jankauskas has served as Lithuanian ambassador to NATO since 2011.

Jankauskas, who joined the Lithuanian diplomatic service in 1991,  will be replacing as head of EUMM Toivo Klaar, who held the position since October, 2013.

Last week the EU extended mandate of EUMM for two years until December 14, 2016.

The mission, which is mandated to monitor the compliance with the August, 2008 six-point ceasefire agreement, has around 200 unarmed monitors in Georgia. EUMM observers, however, are not able to carry out monitoring in breakaway Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
