Georgian Soldier Succumbs to Injuries Suffered in Afghanistan
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 8 Jun.'15 / 20:46

Corporal Ramaz Davitaia died on June 8 in a military hospital in Gori from injuries sustained almost three years ago while serving in Afghanistan.

The latest death brings to 30 the total number of Georgia’s Afghanistan death toll.

Corporal Davitaia was badly injured on June 20, 2012 in the southern Afghan province of Helmand.

All 30 fatalities among the Georgian military in Afghanistan are related to the Helmand province.

In NATO’s previous, ISAF, mission in Afghanistan Georgia was the largest non-NATO troop contribute with about 1,600 soldiers.

In NATO’s new, Resolute Support, mission in Afghanistan there are about 885 Georgian soldiers, making the country the second largest troop contributor.

The Georgian troops, whose duties focus on security and rapid reaction force, are currently deployed in Kabul; Bagram Airfield, and at the German army’s Camp Marmal in Mazar-i-Sharif.

In separate statements Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili, PM Irakli Garibashvili and Defense Minister Tina Khidasheli expressed condolences over the death of Corporal Davitaia.

U.S. ambassador to Georgia, Richard Norland, said he was “deeply saddened” to learn of the passing of Corporal Davitaia.

“Corporal Davitaia was the exemplar of bravery, strength, and heroism. Since his return from medical treatment at a U.S. facility in Germany, Mary [ambassador’s wife] and I were honored to have the opportunity to spend time with him and his family.  We saw him last Thursday in Gori but did not know this would be our last goodbye,” the U.S. ambassador said in a statement.
