European Council President Donald Tusk, who was scheduled to visit Georgia and Armenia this week, had to postpone the trip because of the Greek debt crisis.

“The visit has not been canceled; the visit has been postponed,” EU’s ambassador to Georgia, Janos Herman, told journalists in Tbilisi on July 13.

“You know very well that in [recent] days in Brussels there have been complex discussions about the financial situation of Greece, and just over this night an agreement was reached with Greece. This is a very complex agreement and… at this very moment it is important for President Tusk to be in Brussels… in order to manage the follow-up, the implementation of this agreement,” he said.

“We are already in contact with the Georgian government about the finding a new date and I hope that this new date will not be very far away from now,” he added.

Tusk was expected to visit Georgia on July 14-15 before traveling to Armenia on July 16.

“New dates of the visit, which will be in the nearest future, will be agreed in coming days,” Davit Dondua, Georgia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, said on July 13.
