Georgian, Iranian Foreign Ministers Meet in Munich
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 12 Feb.'16 / 19:22

Georgian Foreign Minister, Mikheil Janelidze, met his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Javad Zarif, on the sideline of the security conference in Munich on February 12.

“The sides reaffirmed their readiness to further deepen bilateral cooperation,” the Georgian Foreign Ministry said, adding that lifting of nuclear-related international sanctions against Iran creates “a new scope of opportunities for further development of relations.”

It also said that “importance of Georgia’s transit potential and steps the country has to take in this direction” was discussed.

Georgia’s PM Giorgi Kvirikashvili spoke by phone with Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani on February 8.

Starting from February 15 Georgia will reinstate 45-day visa-free rules for Iranian citizens, which were scrapped by Tbilisi in 2013.

Foreign Minister Janelidze, who is accompanying PM Kvirikashvili in Munich, also met on the sideline of the security conference on February 12 his counterparts from Luxemburg and Ghana, as well as U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland.

In Munich PM Kvirikashvili, who is also accompanied by Defense Minister Tina Khidasheli, plans bilateral meetings with Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė; Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves; Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev and Slovenian President Borut Pahor; he will also hold talks with his counterparts from Norway and Montenegro, Erna Solberg and Milo Đukanović, respectively, and EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini.
