Three Georgian Soldiers Wounded in Afghanistan
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 7 Sep.'17 / 11:50

Three Georgian soldiers from the 23rd infantry battalion serving in the NATO-led Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan were wounded after a suicide bomber attacked the Bagram Air Base, the Georgian Defense Ministry reported on September 6.

“Senior Lieutenant Iveri Buadze is in critical condition. He is presently undergoing surgery. Sergeant Giorgi Tsikarishvili and Private First Class Irakli Kuchukhidze sustained light injuries and their health condition is satisfactory,” the Georgian Defense Ministry also stated.

The Ministry added that the wounded soldiers are undergoing treatment at a military hospital at the Bagram Air Base.

The incident came slightly over a month after Junior Sergeant Mdinari Bebiashvili was killed as a result of suicide bombing, increasing the total number of Georgia’s Afghanistan death toll to 32.

With 870 soldiers Georgia is the fourth largest troop contributor to NATO’s Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan. The Georgian troops, whose duties focus on security and rapid reaction force, are deployed in Kabul; Bagram Air Field; and at the German army’s Camp Marmal in Mazar-i-Sharif.

The country was the largest non-NATO troop contributor to the ISAF mission which came to an end in December 2014.
