Saakashvili for Downsizing the Parliament
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 10 Feb.'05 / 14:03

In his annual address to the parliament, President Mikheil Saakashvili spoke in favor of downsizing the parliament.

He also supported the mixed electoral system, wherein part of the MPs are elected from "first-past-the-post" districts and part from the proportional election lists. But he added that two-chamber Parliament should be established; however he did not specify when it occurs.

“2,300,000 voters said [in 2003 referendum] that the number of MPs should be no more than 150 and if we fail to implement this, it will be humiliation of these voters. There should be at least 50 MPs elected in the single-mandate constituencies [instead of the current 75], and MPs elected through party-list should also remain,” Saakashvili said.
