02 Jan. '08 |   CEC Receives Fax Machines to Speed Publication of Early Results
Tbilisi 12/30/07.-  IFES, funded by USAID, has provided the Central Election Commission of Georgia with 1,000 fax machines with a view to assisting the CEC to receive election results Summary Protocols directly from the polling stations and speed publication of preliminary results. 
 
The CEC conducted an assessment of all 3,447 precincts in order to determine the feasibility of the project.  After assessing polling station facilities and phone lines, 1,000 precincts were identified where faxes could be installed and used.
 
The fax machines have been distributed by IFES to all District Election Commissions for respective distribution among identified precincts.  The IFES consultants’ team issued respective instructions to operate the fax machines and conducted, together with the distribution, a demonstration on how to use them.
 
"The Central Election Commission is committed to a prompt and timely publication of preliminary results.  The donation of 1,000 fax machines will assist considerably to speed the process, allowing publication of Summary Protocols by faxing them directly from the Precinct Election Commissions to the CEC, who will upload them immediately upon receipt on the CEC website and, on the other hand, process results from these precincts at the data entry centre.  We thank USAID and IFES for their support with this project”, stated CEC Chairman Levan Tarkhnishvili. 
 
The project will allow publication of provisional results from 1,000 precincts, which represents a 29 percent from total amount of precincts.
